He said: “We will be using coal for the next 30 or 40 years. China and India are increasing their use of it. It is vital this technology is developed to help the UK meet its carbon emissions targets.
“Both Gordon and Ed are coming up to have a look at Alcan. The technology they are developing is perfectly safe ecologically, and it can be retrofitted to old power stations.
“That means as well as helping the UK comply with emission targets, it could be sold around the world. That would bring in millions and create jobs. But we need Government investment, as well as from the private sector. It will require huge investment but we can do it.
“I would like to see investment in this so we can do everything in the North East, including all research and development and the building of the technology, again creating many high skilled jobs.”
Fellow North East MP Dari Taylor said: “Not just this but all renewables have the potential to be successful in the region and bring thousands of jobs.”
Chris Pywell, head of strategic economic change at One North East, said: “Carbon capture storage is a priority of the agency.
“We are working with companies to develop appropriate infrastructure and related projects, including offshore storage, clean coal power generation and process industry-related capture.’’
