MP says revamped coastline is best in the North East

PUT a new sunspot on your travel list – the Costa Blyth. That’s the message from the town’s MP after his coastline was invaded by thousands of bank holiday visitors.

Blyth Valley MP Ronnie Campbell said: “On a bank holiday it is always a worry how the weather will turn out.

“This week though there has been great weather and it has vindicated all the work done by the old Blyth Valley Council.

“I came past Ridley Park on Bank Holiday Monday and it was jam-packed with families around the water features and play parks and the beach was even busier. I wish I could get some shares in the fish & chip restaurant at the links as the queues were stretching out the doors.”

Mr Campbell praised the former council leaders for creating what he described as the best tourist spot in the area.

He said: “I don’t think there is anywhere better for a day out in the region and best of all, it’s free.

“It’s great to be able to enjoy the singers in the revamped bandstand, the parks and the beach area all being used and enjoyed.

“Blyth Valley Council may be gone but its legacy is still there for all of our families to enjoy.

“With the restored wartime fortifications being opened up for public use along with the revitalised play areas, beach huts, amenity building providing free showers and toilets, the links area in Blyth is proving to be a great attraction.

“Add to this the works done in Alexandra, Ridley and Astley Parks, the area formally know as Blyth Valley is now a key venue for families seeking a cheap and cheerful day out.

“Allied to the new market place there is much to attract people into the former coal mining town which has changed beyond recognition.”

Blyth Valley Council secured funding of more than £4m for its Blyth Links beach project, which was aimed at making significant improvements in the area and providing new facilities for visitors.

It included an amenity building, a children’s play area and amphitheatre. Beach chalets and an extra 164 parking spaces were created.
