Durham Cricket Club stars given cancer screen test

Supporters and those playing outdoor sports need to be careful too.

Recent research by sk:n showed 40% of people living in the North East have already developed signs of sun damage on their faces, such as brown pigmentation marks and new freckles and moles.

More than one in 10 admit to only applying sun protection when their skin is already burnt and eight per cent never use sun cream at all.

Dr Sean Lanigan, consultant dermatologist and medical director at skin, said: "We welcome sports associations like the PCA leading the charge when it comes to their players’ skin health and urge others to follow.

"When people spend the majority of their time working outdoors, they need to ensure they wear a high-protection sunscreen as well as having moles checked on a regular basis.

"With 200 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every day in the UK and melanoma rising faster than any other type of life-threatening cancer, it is vital that people grasp the importance of protecting themselves from UV radiation."
