But energy engulfed the Theatre Royal as hip-hop stars transformed the foyers into freestyle sessions, graffiti art, live music and breakdancing.

Legend of British breakdancing, Jonzi D is hosting the Breakin’ Convention, an internationally renowned hip-hop dance theatre event for two days.

Youngsters joined in to showcase their own hip hop skills as professionals including Ken Swift and his crew, VII Gems Rock Dance Divison headlined the event. MyoSung, a much-lauded troupe of B Boys from Seoul, Korea, performed The Revolution Will Not Be Institutionalised, a piece of dance with a powerful political message told with humour and sensitivity.

The theatre shook with the beat as French entertainer Salah, known as the Charlie Chaplin of Hip Hop, performed in front of hundreds of spectators.

Jonzi said: This is the second time we have been to Newcastle. We make a point of working with the hip hop community in whichever area we are in.
