Mr Scott said: “With a lot of these products, the main thing is that they can be recycled easily. Everything on the car can be recycled – even where they’ve used carbon fibre on the chassis, that can be recycled and reused – and a lot of the engine has been made with steel and aluminium that can be recycled.”
Dr Steve Maggs, from the team at Warwick University, said: “The WorldFirst project proves that if you are going to wholeheartedly embrace the ‘green is great’ ethos you have to broaden your vision and have a strategy that stretches throughout the chain from the raw materials to the final disposal of the car.
“The project clearly demonstrates that automotive environmentalism can and should be about the whole package.”
Scott Racing is one of a number of firms in the region that is helping to build the North East’s reputation as a centre of low carbon vehicle research and development.
John Brady, the North East Process Industry Cluster’s (NEPIC) biofuels senior project manager, said: “It is great to see biodiesel being shown as a high performance fuel that can be used in a competitive race car, as well as being a green fuel.”
