“I see Gary as a central midfield player and I can see him developing well over the next few months to have what I think will be a very good season.
“He played full-back at the latter end of last season, not through his request or mine really, it was just a case of us not really having a player to play in that position, but Gary got on with the job and made the best efforts to play well.”
Pool, who are still waiting to hear if Michael Nelson will sign a new contract after his deal also expired in the summer, have also announced that chief scout Tommy Miller is to leave Victoria Park. Miller started working for the club in December 1997.
GAVIN Rothery has signed a 12-month deal with Carlisle United after impressing manager Greg Abbott in the second half of the season.
The 21-year-old, a graduate of Leeds United’s academy, joined on trial in January and in March he was rewarded with a deal until the end of the season. He appeared as a substitute at Huddersfield Town on Easter Monday.
“Gavin has the energy and the commitment that we want to see,” said Abbott.
