A SEASIDE town’s multi-million-pound renaissance is set to continue with plans to build more than 50 homes in its traditional heart.

Dilapidated buildings just off Newbiggin-by-the-Sea’s shopping centre are earmarked for demolition.

They could be replaced with modern new apartments surrounding a central square.

Planning officials say the project will enhance the town’s conservation area and augment efforts to make it a more attractive place to live in and visit. Later this week county councillors are expected to grant outline approval for the scheme, just off Front Street.

The fortunes of Newbiggin have been transformed in recent years with the creation of a sandy beach and the construction of a 200m-long coastal defence breakwater.

The area attracted national attention with the installation of Britain’s first permanent offshore artwork – The Couple sculpture – on the end of the breakwater in Newbiggin Bay.

The town has also seen major new housing development and plans are under way to build a £3m maritime heritage centre on the seafront.
