Thousands enjoy music at the Evolution festival

Music fans at the Evolution festival

THOUSANDS of music lovers gathered around the Tyne to enjoy the Evolution festival. With the sun beating down on more than 30,000 spectators, the musical talents of the Human League and indie band The Wombats entertained a sea of dancing fans.

Flitting between the Imagination Stage at Baltic Square in Gateshead, and the Innovation Stage on Spillers Wharf in Newcastle, people were treated to a range of music from new talent to old hands.

Meanwhile, hotly-tipped North East bands Detroit Social Club, together with established Teessiders the Chapman Family sat on the bill alongside the likes of White Lies and Imelda May.

Getting Sheffield band Human League signed up was a particular moment of pride for founding festival director Jim Mawdsley.

He said: “Many of the acts playing Evolution this year have been influenced by them and will be proud to be sharing the same stage.”

Now in its eighth year, Evolution Weekender is one of the biggest festivals in the country and forms part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events developed by culture10.

Stella Hall, culture10 creative director, said: “Evolution stands apart from other festivals for the way it not only shows off NewcastleGateshead as an unbeatable urban setting for live music, but also reflects the talent and energy of the local scene. It means, as a festival-goer, you can catch up with established international artists and discover new up-and-coming acts.

“Finally, as has been the form in recent years, Evolution also offers a programme of advice-based seminars and events.”

And music lovers who missed out on Sunday’s event will be able to watch the likes of hip hop star Dizzee Rascal and Lady Hawke today. Tickets are on sale for £9.50, plus a booking fee, and are available from HMV city centre stores.
