VANDALS punctured the tyres of more than 50 vehicles causing motoring mayhem for an isolated community.
Residents living in Lynemouth, near Ashington, Northumberland, awoke yesterday morning to find flat tyres on their cars and vans parked outside their homes.
It is the latest installment in a campaign of criminal damage to plague the former pit village since the beginning of the year causing thousands of pounds of damage.
Neighbours, too scared to be named for fear of reprisals, said cars offered a lifeline to nearby towns and work due to poor transport links. Some households had two cars targeted, leaving them with eight sets of tyres that had been stabbed with what is thought to be a dart. Workers this morning will have to race to have the tyres replaced at garages that were closed over the holiday weekend.
Vehicles targeted were parked on Fenham Road, Ingleby Terrace, Guildford Square, Henley Square, Chester Square, Oakland Terrace and Neville Square.
One self-employed worker said: "They got my van, all four of the tyres. It’s just sheer mayhem, something needs to be done." A mum who had her tyres slashed, added: "It’s the second time it has happened to us and it better not happen again. Last time I was going on holiday and it was just really annoying.
"Everyone is up in arms and we want something done about it. It has been going on for months."
