Anfield points are possible - Shearer

ALAN Shearer will be looking for Newcastle United to pull off an upset, not mission impossible, when they take on Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow.

Having failed to convert chances and pressure into three points against Portsmouth on Monday, the Magpies travel to Liverpool looking to secure one of the season’s biggest shocks.

Liverpool humiliated Joe Kinnear’s Newcastle side 5-1 at St James’s Park back in December, a result Shearer believes ruthlessly exposed the team’s limitations on the day.

But United’s rookie boss still believes a revitalised squad are capable of going to a ground where United have not won in the league since 1994 and taking at least a point home.

“I’m looking forward to pitting my wits against Rafa Benitez as I have done in all the games so far,” said Shearer, who never won at Anfield as a player. “Whether we can come away with anything remains to be seen.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge and the battle of going to Anfield and trying to come away with something because that is what we will try to do. He has a magnificent squad to choose from, so we are up against it. We are not third bottom for nothing, but as I keep saying, it is not impossible. We are the underdogs but nothing in life is impossible.

“A few teams have gone to Anfield this season and got something, they’ve come away with points – and we’ll be looking to do the same.

“I’m not going to give anything away in terms of formations or selection, but going there with three strikers like we did against Portsmouth would be pretty mad. Mind you, I’ve done mad things before so we’ll have to wait and see.”
