Newbiggin Home Bakery opens second shop

BAKER Keith Glenton has risen to the tough business challenges posed by the economic recession by opening up his second shop in Northumberland.

After producing bread for most of the UK’s major supermarkets for almost 30 years, Keith, 48, has enjoyed a big slice of solo success since opening his own shop in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in 2006.

The Newbiggin Home Bakery has helped him earn more than a crust by going from strength to strength, and attracting customers from all over the North East.

It currently employs nine staff and Keith is now doing so well that he has opened a second bakery and shop in his home town of Ashington.

He has initially taken on four staff at the new premises at Waterside Court on the town’s North Seaton industrial estate.

Keith’s son Martin, 20, is training to be a baker, his daughter Melanie is working in the shop and wife Janet also helps out on Saturdays.

Most of his products are baked on the premises and the new Ashington bakery provides an opportunity to further increase the range of bread, scones, cakes and savouries.

Yesterday Keith said: “When I started the business in Newbiggin I had reached the stage where I thought if I don’t do it now it will be too late. I also wanted to offer something different from the supermarkets, where you get the same wherever you shop.”
