Nuclear test veteran accuses MoD of "delay tactics" over compensation

Last year, along with two other former-servicemen from Tyneside and 900 from across the country, Mr Taylor sued the MoD for damages.

But the Government tried to derail the claim on the basis that the events concerned happened too long ago to be the subject of a compensation claim now.

It is estimated the case could cost the MoD hundreds of millions of pounds in damages if it is successful.

Yesterday Mr Taylor said veterans had been campaigning for many years for a health study. He said: "My main concern is for my family and their well-being."

Scientists believe radiation altered veterans’ DNA and it is likely the new study will look into chromosome damage of veterans and their descendents.

Veterans Minister Kevan Jones said: "I am determined to address the ongoing concerns of nuclear test veterans and their families. This work will enable us to ensure that this group are getting the best care possible and identify where any improvements can be made."

John Lowe, of the British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association, said: "Those who are suffering the most are the children and grandchildren. They have a right to know what their chances are of having disabled children."
