History made as Journal Radio goes live

David Banks, Journal columnist and former Daily Mirror editor who chaired the first Journal Radio show

IT was a historic day yesterday as The Journal became the first regional newspaper to launch a radio station.

The community radio site was launched online at 12.30pm with an hour-long phone-in hosted by our columnist David Banks.

Readers had the chance to air their views on stories making the headlines.

David, a former editor of the Daily Mirror, chaired the show from a studio in his home in North Northumberland.

He said: “It went well for a first time but it would have gone a damn site better if I hadn’t accidentally unplugged my microphone socket minutes before we went on air!

“We’re community radio, broadcasting especially to Journal readers about affairs and events in our community. It is real community radio where people in the region can have their say and talk to the people who write for them every day.”

The show will be back on air at the same time next Tuesday at www.journallive.co.uk/radio
