Your transport links are superb – Lord Adonis
Apr 20 2009 by Chris Robinson, The Journal
TRANSPORT minister Lord Adonis stopped off in the North East as part of this rail journey across the country to claim the region had “superb” transport links.
He told The Journal that plans to introduce a high-speed rail link for the North East was part of the Government’s long term aim.
He said: “I think you have superb transport links, obviously they can be improved.
“The East Coast Main Line is the fastest main line in the country, it gives you a journey time of less than two hours all the way (from London) to York and there isn’t a distance anywhere else in the country that you can do 180 miles in less than two hours.
“We are encouraging local MPs in the North East, local councils and development agencies to engage with the High Speed Two committee to make the case for the North East being part of the long development of the high speed rail in Britain.
“The service is a good service that has improved a lot over years, we are looking as to how to improve it further still.
“While I accept that there is more to do, over time we are continuing to invest in the rail network in the North East over and above the improvements in recent years.”
