Take a look at the best darn knitting in town

KNITTERS who used their needles to illustrate aspects of their lives have inspired a new venture.

An exhibition of items knitted by older women from the St Silas Day Centre, Bishop’s Court Anchor housing scheme and the Knit and Natter group in Benwell, all Newcastle, has gone on show at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland until May 5.

The project, by Equal Arts of Gateshead, encouraged the women to create knitted works which reflect their life experiences.

With the exhibition due to arrive at The Alnwick Garden, staff and volunteers set up their own knitting group which meets weekly in the Tree House.

Now the group, with help from visitors, are knitting an entire garden.

The finished 4ft by 7ft work will go on show for the rest of the summer at The Alnwick Garden.

The exhibition is free and is on show at the courtyard before people pay to enter the garden.
