Parents grieve for son who loved danger

Michael Turner

THRILL-SEEKER Michael Turner spent years dicing with death with his extreme sports. But in a cruel twist of fate he died as a result of simply crossing the road on his BMX bike.

The 18-year-old clung onto life for a week after the accident but doctors turned off his life support machine with his family by his side.

Yesterday his grieving parents have paid tribute to a youngster who loved life.

Mum Gail Burn said: “Michael lived life at 100 miles an hour, he enjoyed everything he did. From the age of about nine he started motocross, he adored his BMX bike and skateboard. He was a one for extreme sports.

“He was only 18 when he died but Michael crammed more into those years than most of us do in a lifetime.”

Michael suffered severe head injuries after being knocked off his bike at 10.55pm on March 28.

He was on Fourth Avenue at the junction with Hawthorn Road, Ashington, when his BMX was in collision with a Citroen C2.

He was taken to Wansbeck District Hospital and transferred to Newcastle General where he remained in the intensive care unit.

But the following Saturday he died peacefully, Gail and dad Michael at his bedside.
