Motorist dies after bus shelter crash

A MOTORIST died when her car ploughed through a bus shelter yesterday while a second crash took out electric supplies after a motorist hit power lines.

Police were called at around 2.40am to a crash on Tunstall Bank, Ryhope, Sunderland.

The 21-year-old driver’s Ford Ka clipped a central reservation before mounting the curb and slamming through the glass bus shelter. Her car stopped after it hit a large walled flower bed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man who had been travelling in the passenger seat was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, but yesterday accident investigators were scouring the scene and conducting door-to-door inquiries.

The shelter had been completely removed and glass littered the street near the crash.

Shocked neighbours said three fire engines, an ambulance and police vans had spent more than three hours at the scene dealing with the incident.
