SPRING has definitely sprung at Witton Castle Lakes with Coxhoe's Ryan Barron smashing the Witton record for the number of fish returned in one day.
Barron returned 52 trout taken on a variety of methods, with the combination of Chameleon Blob and Black Buzzer proving the most effective.
Carl Malpass returned 24 taken on Buzzers and CdC patterns while Gary Roach, fishing Diawl Bach, put back 22.
It was another good week at Jubilee Lakes with the trout taking ferociously at times. James Campion, from Bishop Auckland, had a hard-fighting rainbow of a 14lb 5oz on a Hot Tail Zonker and Dave Cardwell, from Darlington, took one of 13lb 6oz on a Cat’s Whisker. Caistron Lakes continue to fish well with quality fish being taken. W Jamieson, fishing a Buzzer, brought one of 19lb 3oz to the net while Mr Parmley, fishing catch and release, returned nine, the best at 14lb.
Hirst Park Trout Ticklers enjoyed a day’s outing to South Linden fishery, putting in fly casting practice on the open field before heading for the fly lake where the morning session was quiet. However, when they returned to the water after lunch, many of the group took trout.
With South Linden fishing well this week, anglers are reminded there are still a few places available for this weekend’s Big Fish Event. Anyone wishing to take part should phone (01670) 788366. George Maddison had 15 fish in a four-hour session at Langley Dam where M Lee had the week’s heaviest fish with a 7lb 4oz rainbow and Neil Webb had the heaviest bag with five for 16lb. Sweethope Loughs also enjoyed a good week’s sport with both top and bottom loughs doing well. Boat anglers G Willis and S Tyler, from Bedlington, had six for 19lb 8oz, returning a further 46 fish, while Kev Dinning and Rob Clarke, from Newcastle, returned more than 50.
Jim Youngman and D Olde, from Berwick, also had more than 50 fish, Stu Younger and Rob Frame, from Blyth, had more than 30, the best at 7lb 8oz. D Mead, from Ryton, had the week’s heaviest fish, a 9lb 4oz rainbow. Sessions are now 9am to 1pm, 1pm to 5pm and 5pm to 9pm.
Andrew Telford, from Crook, landed a well-conditioned rainbow of 17lb 12 oz at Sharpley Springs while England Youth Team member Mathew Holdroyd brought more than 50 to the net. Chester-le-Street angler William Stanley, fishing a Buzzer, had one of 14lb 8oz, Geoff Phillips had fish of 13lb 8oz and 13lb 5oz, Michael McCullen had one of 13lb 7oz and Brian Corkhill brought a 10-pounder to the net.
