Police Chief apologises for Hayley Adamson tragedy

The prosecutor

CHRIS Enzor, the chief crown prosecutor for Durham, who prosecuted the case, said last night: "Our thoughts are very much with Hayley Adamson’s family at this very difficult time.

"They have acted with great dignity throughout this trial, which has gone into detail about the final moments leading up to Hayley’s death.

"There were no winners in this case. Hayley lost her young life, she is lost to her family and friends, and PC Dougal must forever live with the consequences of his actions.

"The Crown Prosecution Service was wholly right to prosecute this case given the excessively high speed at which PC Dougal was travelling through a residential area, failing to use his blue lights or siren, and leaving Hayley with absolutely no chance of getting out of his way."

The IPCC

THE Independent Police Complaints Commission Commissioner for the North East, Gary Garland said: "This incident was an absolute tragedy, particularly because it should have been totally avoidable.

"PC John Dougal is a highly trained police driver, yet he chose to take totally unnecessary and unacceptable risks.

"The IPCC’s investigation was conducted diligently, sensitively and in a timely fashion, and I am proud of the work our investigators did.

"Their hard work has led to today’s outcome which, while I understand it can never really compensate Hayley’s family and friends for their terrible loss, I hope can give them some degree of closure."
