Nibbles cafe at Newbiggin nearing 100 varieties of scones

A SEASIDE cafe owner is rising to the challenge of setting a record for the biggest variety of scones on offer to customers – as numbers approach the magical 100 mark.

Jackie Nevin, 54, has created 99 different flavoured scones since she and husband Colin, 57, opened their Nibbles cafe and sandwich shop in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland more than two years ago.

Now she is asking Journal readers to come up with their own suggestions for the ingredients to go into making scone number 100 extra special.

Grandmother-of-seven Jackie started off by just baking the traditional fruit, cheese and cherry scones for her customers – but things took off after she decided to up the different varieties to 10, and then kept going.

Last summer customers were able to choose from more than 40 separate flavours, including chilli, Turkish delight and ginger and pineapple.

Now the list has soared, with her delicacies proving so popular that she is preparing to launch a new internet-based mail order service called Scone Mad.
