Green homes look set to get go-ahead

The former Gateshead College Campus site on Durham Road

PLANS to build over 250 environmentally friendly homes and apartments on the former site of Gateshead College look set to be given the go-ahead.

Newcastle property developer Grainger will build 252 units at the former campus site on Durham Road after Gateshead Council overturned its decision to block the scheme last year, subject to conditions.

Grainger’s appeal for planning permission was granted with support of Secretary of State Hazel Blears, who ruled that she was “minded to approve” the plan.

In a written ruling, the Secretary of State backed the Planning Inspector’s recommendation to allow the scheme to go ahead, following a planning inquiry late last year.

The official green light will be given to Grainger in June provided the company meets the conditions set out by the inquiry.

Grainger’s development director Richard Shaw said: “We are pleased that the planning inquiry has been found in favour of the proposed redevelopment.

“Following the announcement from the Secretary of State, we will now take some time to review the best options for the site.”
