AN international company is taking over the running of a troubled North East theatre. SMG, which runs the 11,000-seater Metro Radio Arena and The Journal Tyne Theatre in Newcastle, has signed an agreement to manage the Whitley Bay Playhouse.
The theatre, which has played host to an array of stars including singer Tony Christie in 2005, is currently closed and undergoing an £8m revamp.
A delegation from SMG flew in from America to formally sign a memorandum of understanding with North Tyneside Council, committing the firm to the takeover.
Among the group were Wes Westley, president and chief executive officer of SMG, and John Sutherland, managing director of SMG Europe.
Mr Sutherland said: “We are very pleased to have what will be a very impressive, high-quality venue as part of our portfolio and look forward to a successful partnership with the council and local community to ensure it’s an important venue in the regeneration of the area.”
Meetings with community arts groups have already begun to ensure they are informed about the new facilities available and the opportunities for community use.
Mayor John Harrison said: “I am delighted that SMG Europe, a major player in the entertainment world, is committed to working with us to ensure the Playhouse can be restored to a cultural hub for high-quality entertainment, as well as supporting the arts community.
“This will not only benefit residents from North Tyneside, but also encourage visitors from the wider region which will boost businesses in the area.
