JOURNAL readers can today buy tickets for Mamma Mia! in the North East before they go on general sale next week.

The show, based on the songs of Abba, is coming to Newcastle for its only 2009 UK dates for four weeks over the Christmas period.

The musical, which has broken box office records around the world and has been seen by more than 32 million people, is set to be one of the biggest theatrical events in the region in decades when it arrives at the Metro Radio Arena from December 12 to January 10.

Tickets go on general sale on Monday, but Journal readers can today book them by ringing 0844 847-1693, or by logging on to our sister paper’s website www.chroniclelive.co.uk/mammamia

Mamma Mia! fever is set to grip the region with about £4.5m expected to be ploughed into the economy as a result.

It will be staged in a theatre format at the Arena, with tickets on general sale from Monday, with more than 120,000 people expected to flock to the show in Newcastle.

The show marks a coup for both the city and the North East – the last time the touring version of Mamma Mia! was seen in Britain was in early last year, when it enjoyed a run of sell-out shows in Glasgow.
