A MERCILESS and cowardly attack on an elderly, frail, vulnerable man – that is how the judge sentencing Michael Stevenson described the drug addict’s murder of pensioner Harry Lindley during sentencing yesterday.
The 21-year-old was told he would serve at least 20 years in prison as part of his life sentence for killing the great-grandfather for just £50.
Honourable Mr Justice Walker told Newcastle Crown Court Mr Lindley was a man the Newcastle community of Walker had been proud of, a war veteran and a prominent businessman.
He said Stevenson’s attack had been merciless and cowardly, an act of savagery. Yesterday the killer stood in the dock to receive his sentence, staring blankly ahead.
Mr Lindley’s family released a statement through the police revealing their relief that the killer is behind bars. They added the pain of losing Harry had yet to subside.
Mr Lindley’s daughter, Sheila Davey, said: “We are pleased that justice has been done and that Michael Stevenson will no longer be free to walk the streets and put another family through what he has put us through.
“However, no sentence can ever compensate for our devastating loss. My dad was a fine, upstanding man who lived by his values and was a great example.
“He enjoyed life, and was independent, honest and a true gentleman. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who is sorely missed.
“We would like to express our thanks, particularly to the police and other agencies, and to our family and friends who have helped us through this very difficult time.
