Great North Run campaign opens to honour your heroes

Great North Run competitors make their way across the Tyne Bridge

UNSUNG heroes of the Great North Run are to be honoured – and we’re asking Journal readers to send in nominations.

The BUPA Great North Run Award, in association with The Journal, will be presented at The BUPA Great North Run Hall of Fame Charity Dinner.

Entering could win you or your nominee the exclusive chance to attend the star-studded ceremony at the Gateshead Hilton Hotel on April 7.

The event will again be honouring those individuals who over the years have made a special contribution to the BUPA Great North Run – not just the victors from the Olympian world of elite athletes but also volunteers, administrators, fundraisers and celebrity supporters from the last 28 years.

A Hall of Fame was established two years ago to make sure these individuals would be recognised for helping to turn the event into such a large-scale sporting fixture.

More than one million runners have now braved the gruelling route and millions more around the globe have tuned in to watch their efforts. So if you know someone who you feel has helped the event grow into the world’s biggest half-marathon, or you have an inspirational story to tell about someone you think could be worthy of the award, we want to hear from you.

Maybe you are one of the few people that has taken part in every one of the 26 previous BUPA Great North Runs since the event began in 1981, or you may dress up as a particular character in order to raise awareness of a given cause.
