North East buildings to be honoured at RICS awards

THEY are what make our region so special. Brilliant buildings which define the North East will be honoured at an awards ceremony. A windmill, a green doctor’s surgery and a cinema are among projects shortlisted for a prize at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Renaissance Awards.

Despite the recession there were a record number of entries for the awards, known as the North East’s property Oscars, with 51 making it to the final shortlist.

The aim of the awards is to reward innovative building in eight categories building conservation, commercial, community benefit, design and innovation, regeneration, residential, sustainability and tourism and leisure.

One short-listed entry will then go on to win the project of the year accolade, while all the regional winners will be automatically entered into the national RICS Awards, where they compete against other leading projects from across the UK and the world.

Among the projects shortlisted in the building conservation category are the Gateshead Heritage Centre which rose out of a £1.2m revamp of St Mary’s Church at the Gateshead side of the Tyne Bridge and the Old Windmill, a Grade II-listed property on Claremont Road, Newcastle, now converted into a dentist’s.
