Doddington Dairy create Roman inspired ice cream flavours

Julie Sloan and Neill Maxwell from Doddington Dairies with a Centruion to promote their new range of ice cream

IT could tempt the pallet of Caesar himself. A new flavour ice cream has been launched to commemorate the Roman history of the North East.

The flavours – Apple and Cinnamon, Cherry, and Honey – were inspired by one of the Vindolanda tablets in which a Roman soldier urged his staff to secure ‘A hundred apples, if you can find nice ones’. The new range, created by Northumberland-based Doddington Dairy, will be officially launched at next Tuesday’s Hadrian’s Wall Country Locally Produced Trade Fair in Hexham.

Those who attend can tempt their tastebuds with an exclusive sample of the hand-made ice cream before they hit the shelves.

The Roman ice creams will be stocked at Vindolanda, Segedunum, Housesteads Roman Fort and other outlets in Hadrian’s Wall Country and the North East.

Neill Maxwell, of Doddington Dairy, said: “The Roman tablet sparked our imagination to bring together new flavours from ancient roots.

“Britain has always been well known for its apples and honey and one of the reasons we picked the cherry flavour was because the Romans introduced a better flavour of eating cherry into the country.
