Superstar Bobby is inspiring support of stars

SIR Bobby Robson was last night hailed a “superstar” by Magpies legend Bob Moncur as heartfelt messages continue to flood in following the opening of his new cancer centre.
More than £1.2m was raised in just less than a year in Sir Bobby’s drive to fund the new research centre at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. And last night cancer survivor Bob Moncur praised the former Newcastle United manager, saying his determination was an inspiration to those around him.
Mr Moncur said: “Sir Bobby, to me, is an icon of world of football, not just in this country but he has done it wherever he has been. As far as a man, a manager, and a coach, I don’t think there is any better out there.
“It’s as simple as that – he is a superstar in the game.”
In October 2007 Mr Moncur was diagnosed with colon cancer but following a 10-month battle he was given the all clear last year.
Since then he has been a supporter of Cancer Research UK and has helped raise money for the charity.
Last night he spoke of the inspirational determination shown by Sir Bobby in fighting cancer five times. He said: “I see him at the matches and we’ve both had to deal with the same problems, him more so than me, but the way he has carried himself with such courage shows the kind of man he is.
“It shows so much about his grit and determination that he has focused on raising money for charity, when you could argue it is beyond the call of duty.
“I know what it’s like to have to go through treatment for cancer, but I’ve done it once, not five times. The way he has carried himself is a credit.”
