Hunt for 'Dracula' thieves

Sgt Brian Douglas, of Prudhoe CID, said: “We would urge anyone who was in the area or saw either vehicle to get in touch.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who saw two men wearing Dracula type masks to get in touch.

“The men are described as both being 5ft 6ins. One was of stocky build and wearing a black hooded top. The other man was wearing a pink and grey jumper.

“These men were seen in New Ridley Road prior to the theft and we need to know who they were so that we can eliminate them from our enquiries.

“On both occasions the thieves are believed to have entered the properties when the owners were at home and we would advise members of the public keep unattended doors locked and always put their keys in a secure place.”

Police believe the thieves may have travelled to the area in their own vehicle and they would also like to hear from anyone who saw a suspicious vehicle during the afternoon or evening of February 2.

The thefts in Northumberland came before Home Secretary Jacqui Smith met representatives from charities and public and private sector organisations at a special summit, yesterday, to discuss practical crime-prevention measures.

Break-ins at homes were up 4% in the last set of crime figures, prompting fears of a “credit-crunch crime wave”.

Ms Smith said: “Previous downturns have seen increases in acquisitive crimes but I do not accept this is inevitable. The police are better equipped than ever before to meet the current challenges but we all have a role to play in presenting a united front. ”

Anyone with any information about the thefts is asked to contact Prudhoe CID on (03456) 043 043.
