Are cuts a stride in wrong direction?

PROPOSALS to axe staff involved in the upkeep of Northumberland’s paths will have a knock-on effect on tourism, opponents warned last night.

Northumberland County Council is considering cuts to its Rights of Way and Countryside Management Team in its 2009-10 budget, as it seeks to make savings across all departments in order to meet finance targets set by the Government.

The council is looking to axe three posts, two of which are in management of the county’s rights of way network.

And opponents, including the Open Spaces Society and Ramblers Association, last night warned cuts to such staff would mean paths so popular with walkers, cyclists and horseriders will no longer be kept in top condition.

As a result, they argue visitors will be put off visiting Northumberland.

The open spaces society has called on the council to reinstate its proposed cuts and has written to members to set out its concerns.
