Students earn waves of approval

SAVE Our Souls was the theme of a photography exhibition dedicated to a life-saving charity. Photography students from South Tyneside College held an exhibition of images in the art and design department of the college in order to raise funds for the RNLI.

Twenty eight of the BTEC students were challenged by RNLI bosses to create the show.

A second challenge was to come up with a fun image that the RNLI could use to promote its national SOS fundraising day yesterday.

The winning image, by Bethanie Dennis, shows a student dressed in a yellow waterproof, with mouth stretched in a large round ‘O’, sandwiched between two ‘S’ shapes.

The image will now be used on the RNLI’s website, and in publicity material to raise awareness of the charity’s work.

Sharon Melrose, course leader at the college, said: “This was a really exciting project. As well as giving them a real insight into commercial photography and which images are more marketable than others, it has provided them with some fantastic work for their portfolios.”

RNLI area fundraising manager Michael Charlton said: “RNLI SOS Day is our biggest annual fundraising day, and it is wonderful that the students are supporting it in this way.”
