A PENSIONER was refused bail when he appeared in court over an alleged machete knife attack on an allotment holder.
Leonard Fionda, 76, of Calf Close Walk, Jarrow, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday following the incident in which Joe Holland, 66, suffered facial injuries.
Frail-looking Fionda, wearing a green jumper and glasses, was led into the dock in handcuffs and flanked by a security guard.
He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address in court. Fionda is charged with wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage to a car.
The alleged attack happened at allotments just off Springwell Road, Jarrow, around 3.20pm, Wednesday. Mr Holland was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital and transferred to Dryburn Hospital, Durham, were he received plastic surgery.
Magistrates remanded Fionda into custody and he is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on February 6.
