Colour fascination responsible for everyday saying
PEOPLE’S fascination with animal colour is illustrated by white.
According to Dr Larson, this is shown by depictions of white horses being ridden by royalty and gods.
Another example is the famous policeman on a white horse picture from the 1923 FA Cup Final between Bolton and West Ham.
Then there is Moby Dick, the white whale and the treasured wild white Chillingham cattle in Northumberland.
Dr Larson said that when white elephants occasionally occurred in India they were expensively protected and maintained without having to work, giving rise to the phrase meaning a waste of time or money.
