Website offers life skills

A RANGE of “how to” videos demonstrating techniques for everything from cooking to boxing have been launched on The Journal’s website.

The instructional videos give website users opportunities to learn new skills from a wide range of experts including Olympic boxer Tony Jeffries and Cordon Bleu-trained chef Jane Lovett.

A series of short films featuring Journal fitness expert David Fairlamb show you how to warm up, how to do back exercises and the technique for effective stomach crunches.

Over the coming weeks, further videos will be added to the site building on the initial exercises and focusing on various muscle groups.

Last night David said he was delighted with the initial response and expressed his hope that people will continue to follow the programme. “It has had a huge amount of interest, which has been great,” he said.

“There have been hundreds of people looking at it already in just two or three days so let’s hope that continues.

“I think people want to hear about the techniques. When you go into gyms, you’re given a programme but not the technique.

“Different people will be at different stages – some will be more advanced than others – but I’m building up a big routine for people to follow right through.

“Hopefully people will stick with it.”

The site – www.journallive.co.uk – also provides you with the opportunity to get advice from Olympic medal winning boxer Tony Jeffries on how he generates power in his explosive left hook.

In another series of short videos filmed at his gym in Sunderland, Tony teaches the art of defence, footwork, his best shot – the left hook – and attitude.

For music fans, a member of the Easington Colliery Band shows you how to play the baritone horn – taking you through the basics of how to play a note and a scale.

And if you are looking to hone your basic cooking skills, Jane Lovett’s videos include demonstrations on how best to chop onions and herbs.

For those interested in trying something new in the kitchen, she also gives the recipe for meatballs with honey and mustard sauce. Wine lovers, or those looking to expand their knowledge of the subject, can log on to see The Journal’s wine expert Helen Savage answer frequently-asked questions.

In the course of the films, she covers topics such as decanting, corked wine, champagne corks and keeping wine cool.

The Journal is also calling on readers to come forward with their own talents and volunteer to go in front of the camera for a “how to” video.
