Tough times for landlords
A NORTHUMBERLAND landlord last night said pub owners were struggling in the current climate.
Colin Reid, 62, has owned the Ye Olde Cross Inn on Narrowgate, Alnwick, for more than 20 years, but is facing the darkest days of his career.
Last night, he said the business was now more of a hobby.
He said: “I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve loved every minute. But it has been hard in the last few years and I don’t make the money I used to.”
In a bid to entice customers, Mr Reid offers cut prices on alcohol.
He said: “I try to make it as comfortable as I can, but if you have a few offers on then it helps.”
Less than a mile from Mr Reid’s pub is The John Bull Inn in Alnwick’s Howick Street.
Owner Gus Odlin, 57, said: “Since I took over the pub I have built it up and now it’s got a good name. I was seeing an increase in takings every year and the first decrease was the year the smoking ban was introduced.
“Then the Government knocked 2.5% off VAT on beer and put 8% on alcohol duty. The pubs are one of the great employers in rural communities and we are being forced out.”
