Take a walk after dark in fairytale setting

FINAL touches were being put to the enchanting transformation of Gateshead’s Saltwell Park last night.
A major part of this year’s NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival, Enchanted Parks returns following its successful debut in Saltwell and Leazes Parks in 2007.
For 2008, the action is focused in Saltwell, where a dozen art installations will combine each evening to turn the already special setting into a wonderland for an after-dark walk for all the family.
This year's theme of stories and themes of wintertime has inspired more than 20 local, national and international artists – including Yoko Ono, who will bring one of her Wish Trees – to create a collection of scenes to thrill people of all ages.
And last night we got a sneaky (and beautifully frosty) peek at some of what will be on show from tonight until December 14.
First up was Ice, Water, Fire by Dodgy Clutch in the Dene, evoking the Ice Queen’s melting heart.
Next was Rose Halo, by Newcastle-based Italian artists Gloria Ronchi and Claudio Benghi, in rose gardens they have transformed into an enchanted garden glowing with light and colour.
Blanket, by Heather Deedman, has wrapped up the trees in knitted woollies. The Curiosity Box, by Ross Ashton, turns the bandstand into a mythical ice house.
The first public walks are tonight, but this morning, local children will deck Yoko’s Wish Trees with pieces of paper on which they have written their hopes and dreams.
Although it is a free event, tickets must be booked on (0191) 230-5151 or at Northern Stage in Newcastle.
