Sir Cliff pulls in the crowds at Metro Radio Arena

THEY came in their droves, travelling for miles to see one man. Sir Cliff Richard took to the stage in Newcastle last night as part of his Time Machine Tour.

The so-called Peter Pan of Pop wowed screaming crowds of all ages with five decades of hits.

Super fan Angela Curtin was with her mother Adrienne Flynn and a group of friends armed with placards proclaiming their adoration for the star.

The mother-of-one from Washington, Sunderland, queued for three days to bag her front row tickets, taking it in turns to sleep outside the box office in the cold.

She saw him in Birmingham last week and she’s also off to Glasgow to see him again on Sunday. She said: “It was freezing but absolutely worth every minute.

“There were huge queues and we brought flasks and sleeping bags.

“I have been a fan since I was three years old and I have been everywhere.

“My mam started the craze off when I was little and we used to go and see the Cliff Richard films.

“We just hope he gets another number one, we all want him to but it’s difficult with all of the downloads.”

Large numbers of fans travelled to the city for an over night stay.

Scottish fans Pat Ward, 54 and Irene Cromar, 59, from Dundee, loved the star’s good looks.

Mrs Ward added: “He’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.

“His music is just universal and his performances are amazing, he works so hard but it so good at it.

Lesley Chandler, 55 and her husband Chris, 61, arrived from Chester.

Mrs Chandler said: “We have liked him for years and this is the 12th concert we have been to. I just love his music and he’s a great entertainer.

“My favourite is Constantly, you just have to listen to the words.”

The Time Machine Tour show featured favourite hits from his five decades in the music charts.
