ALAN Shearer picked up a Legend of North East Sport award last night.
The former Newcastle United striker was given the honour at a fundraising dinner in aid of disadvantaged youngsters.
The night was expected to raise thousands of pounds for the Glenn McCrory Foundation. Sir Bobby Robson and Jack Charlton made up a who’s who of sporting legends at the event, in Newcastle’s Civic Centre.
Shearer, 38, said: “It’s great to get it, particularly because of the charity that it’s for, to raise money for underprivileged kids in the region. Glenn and his team are doing a great job.”
Sunderland boxing champion Tony Jeffries was also honoured for the Olympic bronze medal he won in Beijing this summer.
Jeffries, who writes an online blog for The Journal, said he was proud to receive the sporting achievement gong.
He added: “I’m really proud to be from the North East, so to get an award from the North East is brilliant.”
