MP signs petition to save threatened 'lifeline' post office

THE FIGHT to save a popular Northumberland post office from closure has been stepped up with a local MP throwing his weight behind the campaign.
Wansbeck MP Denis Murphy was presented with a 1,750-name petition – which he signed – in support of the St Mary’s Field branch in Kirkhill, Morpeth.
Concerned customers have been flocking to put their names to the petition, which was organised by local Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Tebbutt in response to widespread local anger at the potential loss of a lifeline service.
Campaigners say the Kirkhill branch is successful and profitable, used by an average of 64 customers a day and serves an area with a high percentage of elderly and vulnerable people, who would face a long journey to the nearest alternative.
There are also fears that if the post office closes, sub-postmaster Colin Ayres could be forced to shut his general dealer’s shop in which it is located.
The St Mary’s Field branch is on the regional hit list announced by the Post Office last month. Formal consultations end on Monday.
Yesterday, Mr Murphy said: “I really believe the Post Office has got this one wrong. This branch in Morpeth is at the heart of a community which depends almost entirely on post office services.” Coun Tebbutt said:“ This is a very successful post office. It is also a community hub in an area where there are old people’s housing units.
“The fact that 1,750 customers have signed the petition shows just how valuable it is as a community resource.”
Post Office chiefs have said they will consider all comments and representations before coming to final decisions on which branches will close across the North East.
