Lulu on stage in Bents Park for the South Tyneside Festival

MUSIC to suit all tastes could be heard across the North East over the weekend.

Topping the bill at the South Tyneside Summer Festival, held at Bents Park, South Shields, was 60s star Lulu, who yesterday kicked the open air festival off with support coming from local act Four Worried Men.

The festival continues over the next few weeks with a range of performers appearing at the park.

And mega-star Elton John took to the stage entertaining a capacity crowd at the Darlington Arena.

Musical entertainment of a more classical nature could be found at the Brinkburn Music Festival which is taking place in Northumberland.

The event, being held for the 15th time, includes a blend of contemporary and traditional classical music, and is held in the twelfth century Brinkburn Priory.

General manager Jane Blackburn said the calibre of performers had been reflected in the fact that the poor weather had not stopped people attending.

She said: “It has gone fantastically well despite the weather. We were sold out on Friday and Saturday and the music has been fantastic.

“And there are still tickets available for next week.”

Yesterday’s line up included internationally-renowned cellist, Pieter Wispelwey, and the Gabrieli Consort and Players collaborating with award-winning North East ensemble, Tees Valley Youth Choir.

The festival got under way on Friday with a performance by pianist, Joanna MacGregor and continued on Saturday with violinist, Nicola Benedetti, and pianist Steven Osborne.

The festival will continue over the next two weekends. To book tickets call (01289) 330999.
