Council takes comic approach to cutting car crime

WITTY one-liners and songs from a comedian are being used to help prevent car crime in Sunderland.

Two talking signs which boom out messages specially recorded from comic Dave Spikey, of Phoenix Nights fame, are being put up by the Safer Sunderland Partnership across the city.

Spikey’s 10 car crime quips, triggered by motion sensors, remind motorists to lock vehicle doors, remove valuables and to put goods in the boot.

Coun Tom Foster, chairman of the Safer Sunderland Partnership, said: “The original idea came from Bolton Council who found it was well received and had an impact in reducing car crime where the signs were located.

“The use of a well-known national comedian helps get across a serious message.”

Spikey, who appeared at the Sunderland Empire earlier this year and in 2005, is perhaps best known for his role as Jerry St Clair in the Channel 4 show which made Peter Kay a household name.

He said: “By using humour, people will think twice about what is being said and hopefully take a few moments to ensure their car and property is secure so they don’t become a victim of crime.”

The messages include: “They may be thieves – doesn’t make ’em thick”, “Police warning! Do not leave valuables on display in your car. And for goodness sake don’t hide them under the seat – that’s the first place they look”.
