Number's up for law breakers

MOTORISTS in a Northumberland town will see their speed flashing before their eyes in a police bid to stop speeding drivers.

Officers in Prudhoe will be using an interactive speed sign that will show approaching motorists their speed in giant illuminated figures, encouraging them to slow down.

Northumbria Police said the equipment was purchased after concerns were raised by residents who were worried about speeding in the town, but that it could also be deployed across Tynedale.

Neighbourhood Beat Manager PC Angela Tomlinson said: “As a neighbourhood team, it is vital local people have a say about issues that affect their lives.

“Problems with speeding have featured prominently in community concerns.” The Tynedale Community Safety Partnership has provided funding for the sign, which is mounted on a police vehicle and displays the speed of approaching vehicles.

It will be used across Tynedale area by officers from the neighbourhood teams.

PC Tomlinson added: “This equipment forms a vital link between education and enforcement.

“A similar device has been used before and got positive feedback from the public.

“This is another example of local neighbourhood teams listening and responding to concerns from the local community and working with our partners to find new ways of tackling problems.

“This should have a positive impact on road safety while improving quality of life for local residents.”

Michael Connelly, from the Tynedale Community Safety Partnership, said: “This interactive mobile speed monitoring equipment is available for deployment anywhere in Tynedale to deal with complaints of speeding but aims to provide a safety message rather than punishment.

“From a community safety point of view this fits with public concerns about thoughtless and careless driving and shows how we can contribute to addressing those issues.”
