Can you reflect on your own success?

A PHOTOGRAPHIC competition aiming to find the best shots of the River Tyne is to return for a second year.

Last year more than 800 people entered the Reflect Awards run by the Port of Tyne in association with The Journal. Now the competition is to return with more than £2,000 in prize money up for grabs, along with the opportunity for pictures to be displayed in a special exhibition at the Art Works Galleries in Newcastle’s Ouseburn later in the year.

The Journal is again supporting the competition, which will choose the best pictures taken this year between the mouth of the Tyne and Wylam.

Chairman of the Port of Tyne Sir Ian Wrigglesworth said: “Reflect 2008 is a great opportunity for photographers, both amateur and professional to enter. We will be looking for an image that is both creative and perfectly sums up the feeling of each category rather than pure outstanding talent.

“The Tyne is a cultural landmark in the North East and we want to see how entrants capture the essence of this and express what inspires them about this popular icon.”

This year’s awards have been broken up into four categories: Historic Tyne, Artistic Tyne, Wildlife Tyne and Maritime Tyne.

A maximum of 10 pictures can be entered across the four categories, with one winner and three runners-up selected in each category. The winner of each category will receive a cheque for £500 and the three runners-up will each receive a £50 Jessops voucher.

All the finalists will have their photographs displayed at the Art Works Galleries and included in an album to be used by the Port of Tyne.

Managing director for the Port of Tyne Keith Wilson said: “We were happily amazed at the number and quality of last year’s entries and judging by the number of requests we receive for copies of the winners’ album, 2008’s competition will be well received. “

Judge for Reflect 2007, Matt Forster, of the Art Works Galleries, said: “The competition last year unveiled some outstanding photographers and hopefully this year we will discover even more talent.”
