Brown calls for better links to Scotland

MINISTER for the North East Nick Brown called for better links between the region and Scotland as he launched the 2008 tourist season yesterday.

Mr Brown was speaking as he opened the Tourism Launchpad event held at Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth, a showcase for the North East’s top attractions.

The tourist industry contributes £3.5bn to the region’s economy and has grown 6% in the past four years.

And industry leaders are aiming to keep that growth going with a series of initiatives to help the industry.

Mr Brown said: “I am delighted to support North East England’s tourism industry and help showcase the sector.

“The growing reputation of North East England as a destination means more visitors than ever are discovering what those of us from the region already know.

“Many of the problems facing this region are the same in other parts of the country. For example this region has a lot in common with Scotland and we need to work with them to see what we can do together.

“Some kind of link to highlight food in both regions could be possible for example.

“We will sit down with all parties in Scotland to discuss things together.”

Louise Davis, head of tourism and culture at One NorthEast, which organised the event, said: “This region has so much to offer, there is so much variety here for people. Today was a chance for everyone to get together to see how they could work better together.”

The event was organised by the Tourism Network North East, made up of One NorthEast, Northumberland Tourism, County Durham Tourism, Tees Valley Tourism and Tourism Tyne and Wear.

Most of the region’s top attractions were represented.
