CAN you top the Chorpy Chorpy Cheep Cheep singers?
This week The Journal has been reporting on how the friends and family of Mike and Carol Emerson, from Walbottle in Newcastle, have become unlikely internet stars by singing 70s pop songs with a Geordie accent.
A video of the group singing the 1971 Middle of the Road song Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep – renamed Chorpy Chorpy Cheep Cheep – is racking up thousands of hits on the internet site YouTube.
Last night, the video clip had been watched by nearly 8,500 people, with more than 1,000 logging on yesterday alone.
Visitors to YouTube and The Journal’s website – www.journallive.co.uk – can also see singer Mike Emerson explaining how the performance came about. He said: “We only put it on YouTube so the rest of the family could see what we had been up to – we had no idea it would become so huge.
“In the first couple of weeks it only had a couple of hundred hits but it was then picked up by Metro Radio presenter Tony Horne and things just went ballistic. It’s been incredible.”
Now we want to hear from other amateur musicians to see if anyone can top the Emersons’ efforts. If you have a video of you or your family’s musical exploits that you want to share with the region, contact The Journal newsdesk on (0191) 201-6007 or email us at www.journallive.co.uk.
