Victim Paula's body dumped but not posed

PAULA Clennell was murdered and her naked body dumped after the remains of Anneli Alderton were found, Ipswich Crown Court was told yesterday.

Paula Clennell

Berwick-born Miss Clennell’s remains were found about half a mile from the spot where Miss Alderton was left posed in a crucifix shape, jurors were told. A man identified only as Mr J said he was with Miss Clennell in Ipswich shortly after 4pm on December 10, 2006.

Forklift truck driver Steve Wright, 49, of Ipswich, Suffolk, denies murdering Miss Clennell, 24, Anneli Alderton, 24, Gemma Adams, 25, Tania Nicol, 19, and Annette Nicholls, 29.

The women, who all worked as prostitutes in Ipswich, were found dead in isolated locations near the town between December 2 and December 12, 2006.

Detectives launched an inquiry after Miss Nicol vanished on October 30, 2006.

Miss Alderton’s naked body was found at Nacton, by a dog walker on December 10, 2006. Police set up a cordon around the site less than an hour later.

Miss Clennell’s remains were found at nearby Levington on December 12.

Earlier in the trial, prosecutor Peter Wright QC told jurors that Miss Clennell’s body had not been “posed” and had “all the signs of having been hurriedly dumped”. She had “gone to work” in the early hours of December 10 after getting “mad“ at a boyfriend who refused to give her money to buy drugs, the court heard.

One of her friends, a prostitute identified only as Miss F, said the two women were at Miss Clennell’s boyfriend’s home in Ipswich early on December 10, 2006.

“He would not give us any more money. She (Paula) got a bit upset. She got a bit mad actually. She said ‘I’ll show him’. He thought a lot of her. They were close. She went out to work.”

Miss F said she accompanied Miss Clennell around Ipswich’s red light area. Miss Clennell stopped at a friend’s house in London Road, Ipswich – where accused Steve Wright lived – and the two women parted.

Prosecutor Peter Wright QC asked: “Did you ever see her again?”

Miss F replied: “No,” and began to weep.

The hearing continues on Monday.
