Online welcome greets puppies

CHRISTMAS came early for a North police dog who gave birth to her first litter.

The five puppies can be seen on the police webcam

Becky, a German Shepherd with Durham Constabulary, was due to go into labour tomorrow. But she gave birth to five puppies in the early hours of Saturday.

Dog lovers can now watch the three-year-old tend to her litter of bitches via the Force’s Puppy Cam.

Although the puppies have not yet been named they will all be given names beginning with the letter ‘D’ as this is the fourth litter in the programme.

It is believed one of the puppies will go on to serve with Northumbria Police and two will remain with Durham Constabulary and be trained as police dogs.

The other two it is thought will be placed elsewhere at stations in the country.

This is the first litter for Becky, who is kept as a pet by an officer and is used as a brood bitch for the specialist breeding of police dogs.

Paul Hedges, supervisor at the North-East Region Dog Training School, at The Barns in Spennymoor, County Durham, said: “She’s an excellent mother and is looking after them really well herself.

“She gave birth to five bitches during the early hours but we weren’t expecting them until Christmas Day. Three of them have already been spoken for to begin working as police dogs within the Force.”
