What’s your greatest sporting moment?
Nov 17 2007 by Graeme Whitfield, The Journal
WHAT are the North-East’s great sporting moments?
The Journal has launched a survey to find the region’s favourite sporting moments, either from the region or further afield.
But to jog your memory, this week’s Flashback feature is recalling some of the region’s greatest triumphs.
Sunderland fans, for example, would surely plump for the club’s amazing 1973 FA Cup victory – unless there are those who can remember the team taking the league title in 1936.
Newcastle fans might also need a long memory for actual trophies, but who can forget three FA Cup victories in the 1950s or the Inter City Fairs Cup win of 1969?
But it isn’t just in football that the North-East has excelled.
Newcastle Falcons can point to a league win in 1998 and also cup triumphs in 2001 and 2004, while their predecessors Gosforth won the John Player Cup in 1976 and 1977 and Falcon Jonny Wilkinson memorably won England the World Cup with a late drop-goal in 2003.
Athletics fans may hark back to the days of Brendan Foster or Steve Cram, or the first Great North Run in 1981.
The search for the region’s sporting favourites is part of a wider project which will also see The Journal compiling the favourite films, songs and books – and you can vote for your favourites now.
