1,000 fans cast vote for anthem's return
Oct 19 2007 by Chris Robinson, The Journal
MORE than 1,000 fans have now cast their votes for Newcastle United to use the tune Going Home, the theme from the film Local Hero, as their official NUFC anthem.
But The Journal still needs your support to convince the bosses at St James’s Park to run with the idea.
Last night they remained tight-lipped whether or not the Mark Knopfler number will be echoed out of the terraces as the teams walk out on to the pitch for Monday’s match against Tottenham.
A spokesman said: “Music at the game is still under review. The music issue is one that generates a lot of different opinions among our fans. A lot of fans have a special tune that they like to remember. There are also fans that like no music.”
So far 1,101 fans have voted for Going Home to become Newcastle United’s official anthem.
Folk song the Blaydon Races notched up 59 votes while the song that replaced Going Home this season, If the Kids Are United by London punk band Sham 69, has just 11 votes.
Meanwhile 17 readers said that they would prefer it if there was no music played at all and that the crowd alone built up the pre-match atmosphere. So far The Journal’s campaign has received the thumbs up from the club’s honorary vice-president Malcolm Dix, an integral part of Sir John Hall’s takeover of Newcastle United in 1991.
Last night just fewer than 700 fans had signed up to social networking site Facebook to add their support to a special page set up in support of Knopfler’s song.
The 1983 classic by the Dire Straits musician was ditched at the start of the season when Newcastle United officials said they wanted to try an alternative to “improve the atmosphere.”
