Your views of the North
Oct 6 2007 by Peter Leathley, The Journal
REGULAR readers of The Journal have been enjoying the skills of our photographers for much of our 175-year history.
But for the last three years, they have also been able to savour the camera skills of fellow readers thanks to a popular feature called View of the North.
The regular slot was introduced in 2004 on an expanded letters page by editor Brian Aitken and picture editor Simon Greener.
And almost immediately it was enthusiastically taken up by amateur snappers in the region fighting to get their pictures in the pages of The Journal alongside prize winning photographers like Tim McGuinness, Emily Barber and Ian Winter.
The subject matter has included spectacular shots of the region’s coastline – Bamburgh Castle and St Mary’s Lighthouse being particular favourites – but also pictures of our unspoilt countryside and the unexpected beauty of more urban areas.
And the pictures have certainly hit a chord with our readers, some of whom successfully lobbied for the letters pages to be re-designed to ensure pictures were not carried across two pages as they cut them out each day to keep in a scrapbook.
As The Journal celebrates its 175th anniversary, we have gone into our archives to bring you a selection of Views of the North.
As well as the pictures here, there are more in an online gallery at www.journallive.co.uk. Though readers’ photographs are not for sale, you can buy any picture taken by Journal staff at www.journalive .co.uk/buyaphoto or by calling (0191) 201-6001.
